Deep Thought – Where is GeekyHabitat Going
By · Comments
So I have been sitting down having a solid think about where I want all of my blogs to go forward now that I have been blogging for a little over twelve months.
I have decided that I want to keep GeekyHabitat very much tech related, however I will not be posting regularly to this blog. I am going to keep it as more of a place that I can put things as an archive that people can find by searching.
In short, I will only be posting here when I really have something to post, so I won’t be updating this on anything close to a regular schedule.
Keep an eye out in the near future though as I will be putting up some more details of the plugins I have recently developed fo Wordpress, among other things.
So, just thought I would fill you all in on that one.

My gripes with Tivo in Australia! Thoughts?
By · Comments
So I purchased myself a Tivo from Harvey Norman around 3 weeks ago as it has just been released in Australia. I was very excited to get it up and running and start watching my favourite shows when I wanted to. However I have found that there have been numerous critical issues with the Tivo since I started using it. These include Tivo audio levels fluctuating on standard definition channels (does not seem to affect high definition channels), shows not being recorded on the Tivo due to incorrect schedules/shows running overtime (which in turn effects Tivo Suggestions and makes them useless as they rarely record the whole show) and shows not being picked up correctly when scheduled as a season pass.
In regards to the Audio issue, I contacted Tivo support Australia, who (in two ‘one liner’ emails) said that it was a broadcasting issue (first email) and that the broadcaster had been notified (second email). I have since had an extended discussion with Peter from Channel 10 technical support, and he informed me that he had asked the entire support team and nobody had even heard of this being an issue.
So I thought I would post the “request for support” that I sent to Tivo to request assistance and feedback with some of these critical flaws. I also thought it would be good to get some feedback from other Tivo users in Australia and see if other people are finding this to be an issue and see if we can get ourselves heard somewhat.
So if you have a Tivo, what are your thoughts and experiences, have you been having the same issues, if so to what degree. Also so that we are actually constructive here, what do you think could be done to fix it, what are some of your ideas? I had one possible thought… The Tivo online scheduler checks in for updates to shows you have scheduled online every 15 minutes, if a function could be added to also check for updated real-time scheduling every 15 minutes then this problem could be alleviated, permitting of course that they had someone there to update this information in real time. Thoughts?
My Open Letter:
To whom it may concern,
I purchased the Tivo recently after seeing an advertisement on Channel 7 which stated “Never miss a thing again” as one of the main selling points.
However I have been finding that on many broadcasts (and *especially* in the case of Channel 7s own broadcasts) partial and full recordings are being missed(the incorrect show being recorded either in partial or in full) because previous shows are running far over the allotted time.
Case and point would be The Amazing Race (Wed 13/8th at 2AM Channel 7 Standard Definition). The show before this (the Olympics) ran 38 minutes over its allotted time. As a note I have scheduled all my Channel 7 recordings with an additional half hour and I *still* missed the end of this episode.
While I am aware that things like the Olympics and live broadcasts will go over schedule by their very nature this is not the only occurrence that I have experienced, it was just the icing on the cake. Other times that this has been most apparent (and a regular occurrence) would be when I have scheduled “Seconds from Disaster” and “Air Crash Investigations” although they have not been running for the last week due to the Olympics prior to this they had. Although I have not kept specific records on average these shows were starting well over 15-20 minutes later than the scheduled time (which is why I started putting a 30 minute addition on).
I am finding that the Tivo is not living up to Channel 7s advertising due to scheduling issues on all Australian channels and feel that Tivo is being misrepresented in its abilities and that Channel 7 itself needs to lead the pack in resolving this issue if it cannot be resolved by a technical means.
I would like to hear what is being done to rectify this as clearly it is an issue that *must* be resolved in order for the Tivo to function correctly and as it has been originally advertised.
To summarise the main points:
1. Scheduled recordings are being missed either in full or parts thereof due to broadcasting times not being adhered to and no automatic functionality for Tivo to compensate for this.
2. Available recording time on the Tivo is being vastly limited due to the required addition of immense amounts of padding to each episode.
3. Tivo Suggestions are only being half recorded due to them not beginning or ending at their scheduled times hence rendering the Tivo Suggestions useless.
4. Schedules are overlapping often due to the requirement of putting such large amounts of additional padding on scheduled recordings.
Therefore I feel that the Tivo is severely crippled in how it is operating for me. When shows are recorded I have been exceptionally happy with the quality and convenience of the Tivo however with the three issues listed above I feel that the device is not operating within the original conditions that it was sold. I have also spoken to numerous other Tivo users who have raised similar concerns regarding the Tivo and whom would like to see a resolution to these issues.
I request a formal response to this grievance as soon as possible and am most happy to assist in working towards a solution (including trials and testing of any new software where possible) to benefit other Tivo users around Australia.
I look forward to hearing your response.
Regards
Stuart Ryan

OpenX Tutorial Pt 2: Upgrade a previous installation
By · CommentsI have decided to post this a week early as a sneak peek to the rest of the tutorial. I am still working on getting the complete tutorial written up (currently parts 1-3 have been written of an estimated 6 total parts) and it will be completed within 7 days.
Upgrading an Installation of OpenX is quite an easy task to do. However I wanted to put together something with a few more details of the way to FTP files for installing and upgrading OpenX. So I thought that I would put this mini tutorial together to outline the upgrade process and some things to be aware of.
Upgrading OpenX 2.4 to 2.6
For this tutorial I will be using the FileZilla free FTP client, if you would like to follow along I would recommend this as a great FREE FTP client.
Step 1 – Backup your installation:
If there is one thing I can recommend to you before doing an upgrade of any software, web based package etc it is to BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. Too often I have seen (and have myself as well) upgraded a web based software package and something goes wrong. If you do not have a backup then you are out of luck.
How you back up vastly depends on who you are hosting with and what control panel software (if any) you have. If in doubt please contact your web hosting company and request they perform a backup for you.
Step 2 – BACKUP YOUR INSTALLATION:
No.. really I cannot emphasise enough how much you should backup prior to upgrading so I wanted to put this as two steps for effect. Once you have backed up, move onto step 3.
Step 3 – Download the latest installation:
Head on over to http://www.openx.org/download and get the latest download, if you are uploading via FTP (as most people will) I recommend you download the ZIP version. Unzip the download to a local directory on your computer.
Step 4 – Connect via FTP and rename old folder:
1) Connect via FTP to your site and browse to one directory *above* your OpenX installation directory. For example OpenX was installed in “yourhomedir/public_html/openx” then browse to “yourhomedir/public_html”. For the purposes of this tutorial my OpenX installation directory is “openxupgrade”
2) Rename your OpenX directory on your webserver to “openxupgrade_bak” (or similar).
Step 5 – Upload new files:
1) Create a directory on your webserver which has the same name as the original directory you renamed in Step 4. For example I would create a directory “openx” so I would then have two directories in “public_html” which would be “openx” (currently empty) and “openx_bak” (old installation).
2) Upload the files that you unzipped in Step 3 to the new folder you just created.
Step 6 – Import old configuration:
1) In your FTP client browse to your old OpenX installation folder and then to the “var” directory.
2) Download any files that have “.conf.php” at the end, usually there will be a default.conf.php and yourdomain.com.conf.php, download both.
3) Re-upload these files into the new OpenX installation directory in the same location.
Step 7 – Run Upgrade Wizard:
Browse to http://www.yourdomain.com/openx/www/admin/install.php. You will see the below welcome screen click “Continue”.
![]()
Step 8 – Accept Terms and Conditions:
If you accept the terms and conditions click “I agree”.
Step 3 – System Check – Failed:
In this step you will get file permission errors. Follow the graphical instructions to change the permissions via FTP, repeat this for each directory/file listed. Then click “Retry”
![]()
Step 3 – System Check – Succeeded:
Click “Continue” to proceed.
Step 3 – Log in as Admin:
In order to upgrade the system you must log in with the administrator account, enter your login details then click “Continue”.
Step 3 – Database Settings:
It is possible you will now get a message regarding Timezone differences, if you need previous statistics to be accurate you will have to fix the data manually, this will not be covered here. Click “Continue”.
Step 3 – Database Upgrade Completed:
Step 3 – Configuration Checklist:
Accept the defaults and click “Continue”.
![]()
Step 3 – Upgrade Completed:
In this step ensure that there are no errors. You will see in the below image that we have some issues. If you have SSH Access to your server change directory to the OpenX installation directory and run the commands listed in the RED section to set the correct permissions otherwise you will need to set these permissions through your FTP client. You should then see the second image. Then click “Continue”

Site News + Entrecard + SezWho
By · CommentsHeya all,
I thought it was time that I gave everyone a site update on what is happening, what has been changing on here recently and a BIG change that came through Entrecard last week.
So firstly, I have been aware for some time that visitors using Internet Explorer 7 have issues when viewing my blogs. The issues that have arisen are mainly that some images display slightly out of alignment. Due to this, and due to the fact that in a week or so I will be releasing the massive OpenX tutorial (read more about that below) I decided that it was time to get this fixed.
As I have no idea on how to do this myself (believe me I have tried), I decided to post a request for assistance on RentACoder. In short RentACoder is a secure environment for anyone from Joe Average to a large organisation to connect with programmers from around the world. I am pleased to say I now have a gentleman from the US working on the issue as I write this (ok… ok he is probably in bed now, but you know what I mean). So I hope this will be all resolved in the next few days. So if you are a fellow blogger and need some help getting some things worked out on your site I would really recommend a look, so far I could not be happier.
Onto the changes on Entrecard, as most of my reader base will know Entrecard recently partnered with SezWho. SezWho provides services for people to vote on comments and posts on blogs (and other services such as forums as well). For the full details please see this post on the Entrecard blog.
This was one of the main reasons I decided to get the Internet Explorer images issue fixed up, because it is also affecting the voting stars, so please bare with me while I get this fixed up.
Finally, the much awaited (and anticipated) OpenX tutorial is nearing completion. For those of you that don’t know I have been writing a tutorial on installing, configuring and using OpenX, the open source advertising management solution. I even had a staff member from OpenX comment on one of my previous posts (which I thought was really cool). I have worked on this solidly for pretty much the whole weekend. I have completed parts one through three and estimate that there will be a total of six parts.
So if you have one or more blogs or websites keep an eye out on in the coming weeks for this full blown tutorial.
I would love to hear your thoughts on any of the site news, and especially the new Entrecard and SezWho partnership.

OpenX Tutorial Update
By · CommentsHeya everyone,
I just wanted to provide you all with an update on the OpenX tutorial I promised a while back, as the beta of 1.5 is becoming more stable I have decided to install it and begin playing around. Once I am happy that I have enough knowledge I will write up the tutorial and may (or may not) have it posted before the beta goes stable.
So… keep an eye out and I will keep you posted.
